HANDY FAQ's
1. Do I need to be fit or experienced to start BJJ?
No. You don’t need any prior fitness or martial arts experience. Classes are designed to help you build fitness, confidence, and skill gradually at your own pace.
2. What should I wear to my first class?
Wear comfortable sports clothing (t-shirt and shorts or leggings) if you don’t yet own a gi. Avoid clothing with zips or pockets. Bring flip-flops to wear off the mat.
3. Will I get injured?
BJJ is a contact sport, so minor bumps and bruises can happen. However, safety is a top priority. You’ll be taught how to train safely, tap early, and protect yourself.
4. What does “tapping” mean?
Tapping is a way to signal that you want to stop. You can tap your partner, the mat, or say “tap.” When someone taps, all action stops immediately.
5. Am I too old / not strong enough for BJJ?
No. BJJ is based on leverage and technique, not strength or age. People of all ages, body types, and athletic backgrounds train successfully.
6. How often should I train as a beginner?
Most beginners start with 2–3 classes per week. This allows time to learn techniques, recover, and enjoy the process without overtraining.
7. What is the belt system in BJJ?
Adult belts typically progress from White → Blue → Purple → Brown → Black. Progression is based on skill, consistency, and understanding—not just time served.
8. What should I do if I feel uncomfortable or overwhelmed?
That’s completely normal at the beginning. Let your instructor know, take breaks when needed, and remember that everyone started as a beginner.
9. Do I need to compete?
No. Competition is optional. Many people train BJJ purely for fitness, self-defence, confidence, or enjoyment.
10. How long does it take to get better?
You’ll start learning immediately, but progress comes with consistency. Focus on showing up, learning one small thing each class, and enjoying the journey.
